Aussie Rules Football Round 9 Best Bets, Picks, and Predictions
(11) Essendon vs. (14) Sydney Swans (-7.5 on DraftKings)
Saturday, 5/10/25 at 2:15 AM ET (Friday – 11:15 PM Pacific)
After starting the year out 0-2, Essendon has won four of its last five games. Their only loss in that time period was against leagues-best Collingwood. Sydney, on the other hand, has only won two games this year.
A lot of Essendon’s success has been thanks to Zach Merrett. However, Sydney has experience stopping him, especially with James Jordon. Last year, he was only allowed 17, much lower than his normal average.
Sydney is coming off an 87-73 upset over the GWS Giants, and it felt as if they got their mojo back. They’ll look to make it two in a row at Marvel Stadium, where they’ve been very good. In fact, they’ve won seven of their last eight there. Essendon has only won two of their last six here.
The Swans do have more injuries than the Bombers, but I think their win last week will give them the confidence they need to keep pushing. Despite the records and standings, Sydney is the more complete team.

(6) Western Bulldogs (-0.5 on ESPNBet) vs. (4) Gold Coast Suns
Saturday, 5/10/25 at 5:35 AM ET (2:35 AM Pacific)
This is one of the best games in Aussie Rules Football Round 9, and one of the hardest ones to make picks for as well. However, I can’t help but put it on the slate.
The game will be played at TIO Stadium, which has a tendency to get sloppy and messy. We’ll see if that affects the game just as it did last week for Gold Coast.
Gold Coast currently ranks third in disposals, while the Bulldogs rank second. Both of these teams have the potential to put up a lot of points, even if there are sloppy conditions.
Gold Coast has been hit and miss the past four weeks. They beat North Melbourne, but then lost to Richmond. Then they beat Sydney, but lost to Brisbane. The Bulldogs have won three straight against ST. Kilda, GWS, and Port Adelaide.
This will be a tight matchup. However, I’m going with the Bulldogs to get it done.

(5) Adelaide Crows (-11.5 on ESPNBet) vs. (12) Port Adelaide Power
Saturday, 5/10/25 at 6:10 AM ET (3:10 AM Pacific)
One of the strongest, if not the strongest, rivalries in Aussie Rules Football is Adelaide and Port Adelaide. They’ll face off against each other in Round 9. Adelaide has won three of these last four matchups.
If Port Adelaide wants to keep up, they’ll need to have Kane Farrell and Connor Rozee step up and score early and often. Port Adelaide is coming off a 90-point loss to the Bulldogs. Before that, they had won three straight against Hawthorn, Sydney, and North Melbourne.
Adelaide has had some stronger competition as of late. They lost by one point to Gold Coast and 19 to Geelong. They did beat the GWS Giants and Carlton, but also lost to Fremantle. Still, this Adelaide team is more dominant than Port Adelaide and they’ll show up in the rivalry game.

(7) Geelong Cats (-15.5 on ESPNBet) vs. (8) GWS Giants
Sunday, 5/11/25 at 1:20 AM ET (Saturday – 11:20 PM Pacific)
This game features two teams that seem to be headed in different directions. Geelong is really heating up, while the GWS Giants have lost their last three games. They’ll have a tough matchup and are at risk of losing four straight this weekend.
Geelong is coming off a very impressive performance against the league’s best team, Collingwood. They’ll hope to keep their momentum rolling. Not only was it an impressive win it was a big upset and showed everybody that Geelong should be taken seriously.
The Giants will have to revert to their earlier-season form if they want to win this one. They were averaging 97.4 points per game. However, in the last three games, that’s dipped to 62.6. They’ll get small forward Gryan Miers back from injury. Time will tell if it’s enough to turn their scoring back around.
This game should be a really good one. However, I’m rolling with Geelong to stay strong and show that last week’s win over Collingwood wasn’t a coincidence.

(2) Brisbane Lions (-35.5 on DraftKings) vs. (17) North Melbourne Kangaroos

I know what you’re thinking right now. Wait a minute, Justin, you normally just have four games. This is the fifth! We’ve gone 2-2 the past two weeks. I don’t want to have another push, so we are throwing in a bonus game.
This one is simple. The Brisbane Lions are insanely good and gunning for Collingwood’s number one spot. I realize 35.5 points is a lot. However, I’m not fading this Lions team anytime soon, especially against one of the worst teams in the league.
